Wastewater has emerged as a reliable indicator of the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the population. The ability to detect RNA fragments of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is increasingly and independently being reported from research groups in nearly all EU Member States (Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany etc.), UK, Australia, USA, Japan, UAE, Istanbul, Iran and Brazil. Of particular note are studies which have detected the virus in wastewater before clinical cases are reported, indicating that the approach offers potential to form part of an early warning community public health surveillance system.
Researches was detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA on Aircraft wastewater in Australia, Dubai and Schiphol Airport. Governments and industries are now developing plans for a COVID-19-safe society, thus the passengers of air travel could play a significant role in importing new COVID-19 cases. The aviation industry would benefit from objective matrices for monitoring the potential risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission associated with their operations.
On March 17, 2021 the European Commission adopted a Recommendation on monitoring COVID-19 and its variants in wastewaters in the EU*.
